Quick Start

Overview

ProdWiki's goal is to organize all of the world's product information. ProdWiki assists people researching products to help them buy, sell, repair, upgrade, tinker, learn, and explore.

Inspired by Wikipedia, ProdWiki is based on the same software, Creative Commons license, and community guidelines, but with a different scope. While Wikipedia includes pages on "notable" topics in any subject, ProdWiki includes pages on any product.

Human + AI Collaborative Contribution Process

To improve efficiency, and thus the quality and scope of its contents, ProdWiki uses its AI tool called ProdWikiBot to add draft data to articles that humans then edit. We are inspired by how Project Gutenberg uses a combination of AI and human effort to digitize public domain books. First, they scan books and use OCR AI to create draft digital versions. Then, Distributed Proofreaders review and correct any mistakes. This process is much more efficient than having humans read and type in all of the public domain books without the AI-powered step first. Similarly, on ProdWiki, instead of needing people to gather all product data manually, AI generates the first draft, then people review and edit.

To generate the first draft of an article, ProdWiki administrators supply ProdWikiBot with a list of high quality source materials, such as product reviews, review videos, and manufacturer pages. ProdWikiBot then builds the article, citing the provided sources, and adds notices to the top of each section that it was written by AI. Because ProdWikiBot's writing is based on source materials, it very rarely hallucinates. It does occasionally fail to include facts or other context from the source articles.

Like on Wikipedia, contributors on ProdWiki can add, edit, and discuss any article. After reviewing a section written by ProdWikiBot, contributors remove the AI notice from that section.

What's Included

Articles on ProdWiki aim to include comprehensive product facts, review information, hidden problems, hard to find information, manuals, repair info and useful links. In the future, articles will include product news and current pricing.

History

ProdWiki was started in July 2024, to organize all product information, starting with the laptops category. It began with the laptops category, using data imported from a private database of a few hundred laptops.

Who are the administrators

ProdWiki was founded in Seattle by Joe Golden and Chandradeep Chowdhury, two guys who love laptops, AI, Wikipedia and creating useful technology. Joe has a PhD in economics, and has been a software engineer and economist at large tech companies before founding, growing and selling an e-commerce startup. He taught the Stanford MBA class The Business of AI in 2024. Chandradeep has a MS in computer science, was a software engineer at a large tech company with experience in AI and web development, and is writing a sci-fi novel.

Getting Started Contributing

First, visit this laptop page, that has finished the review process as an example of a complete page: Lenovo Legion Pro 5/5i Gen 9 16IRX9 (2024).

Next, browse the Laptops category page or search to find a laptop. Hit the edit button to begin editing. Feel free to start making additions and changes. If you can verify that the information in any section is correct, remove the AI notice from that section.

To add a page, just go to the URL for it, as though it already exists. You can add pages on specific laptops, or other pages relevant to laptops.

Join the ProdWiki Discord to participate in community discussions, provide feedback and request that we use ProdWikiBot to create new pages or add sources to existing pages.
