IPS, or in-plane-switching, is a type of panel where there is a layer of liquid crystals between two glass surfaces, and the crystals are in parallel to the surfaces in predetermined directions and are rotated by an electric field in order to generate an image, similar to a shutter of a camera. It is the most commonly used panel type, and in laptops, one can see a wide variety of IPS panels, from low-resolution-and-refresh-rate panels used by cheap office laptops, to high-end ones that can be found in expensive gaming and workstation laptops.
